This is the largest region of France and therefore has the largest area of active farms in the country although these are diminishing with the ever growing population.
A very contrasted landscape, with the mountains reaching more than 3000m (providing excellent skiing); whilst further to the north there are fertile plains beside the rivers for agriculture.
During recent years important electronic (Alcatel, Bosch, Siemens) aviation (Airbus) and space industries have evolved in the area, particularly around Toulouse. This has provoked radical changes in the local infrastructure and communications network.
